Blackwood & HickoryTunes of ArgyllWhere we are

Argyll has produced many of the finest composers of pipe tunes. In particular John MacColl, John MacLellan and Willie Lawrie are universally renouned as three of the worlds greatest composers of competition march tunes. Mid Argyll has also produced its share of great composers. Some of these like Archie Kenneth, Donald MacPhedran and John MacLachlan are well known, but as this forthcoming collection will demonstrate there has been and continues to be a wealth of talented composers from, or who have written tunes relating to Mid Argyll. These include but are by no means limited to George Milton, Allan Begg and Tony Higgins.

This forthcoming collection reflects a really high standard of composition throughout, and includes a broad range of tunes from well known standards such as Leaving Lunga, Inveraray Castle, Dalnahasaig, Duntroon, the Blackberry Bush and Bonny Argyll, to tunes destined for similar status featured on the Mid Argyll Pipe Bands acclaimed album "Blackwood and Hickory" such as the Boys of Loch na Corra, Somerleds Legacy and Colins New Clippers. There are tunes here for pipers of all standards, band and solo competitors, traditionalists and modernists alike.

The collection also contains a lot of additional historical information and extensive notes on the tunes which will make the collection a work of interest to anyone with an interest in Mid Argyll and other musicians. It is a fraction of the Mid Argyll tune collection compiled by Rod Buchanan over many years, so there's plenty of scope for volume 2.

It is hoped to launch the collection in the Autumn of 2009. Email us today to reserve your copy.
